How Snow Impacts Your HVAC System

Primary Blog/HVAC/How Snow Impacts Your HVAC System

When the snow falls, your HVAC system works overtime to keep you warm, but the snow and ice can create some unexpected challenges. Awareness of these potential issues will help you prevent bigger problems down the road, such as:

Blocked Vents or Intakes

Snow or ice buildup can block your furnace vents or air intake pipes. When this happens, your HVAC system might not work efficiently—or worse, it could cause dangerous carbon monoxide to build up inside your home.

Frozen Heat Pumps

If you rely on a heat pump, snow and ice build up can prevent the unit from working properly. It’s normal for a heat pump to frost over in cold weather before the defrost cycle, but if it gets entirely covered by snow or ice, you'll likely face heating issues.

Clogged Outdoor Coils

An outdoor condenser, often used in HVAC systems with a heat pump, needs proper airflow to function. Snow, ice, and even fallen debris from winter storms can restrict airflow, reducing efficiency and causing strain on the system.

Rust and Corrosion

Prolonged exposure to wet snow or melting ice can lead to rust and corrosion components, which may shorten system lifespan over time.

Luckily, with routine upkeep and proactive measures, you can prevent these common issues and keep your HVAC system running smoothly.

4 Simple Steps to Protect Your HVAC From Snow

Taking care of your HVAC system during snowy weather doesn’t have to be complicated. Here’s a quick checklist to follow:

1. Clear Snow and Ice Around Outdoor Units

After each snowfall, check your outdoor HVAC unit or heat pump and clear any snow or ice nearby. Aim for at least 18–24 inches (2 feet) of space around the unit for the best airflow. Avoid using sharp tools to chip away ice, as this could damage the equipment. Instead, gently brush off loose snow and use warm (not boiling) water to melt any ice buildup.

2. Check and Clear Exhaust Vents

If you have a gas furnace, locate your furnace’s ventilation pipes, usually at the side of the home, and ensure they’re clear of snow or ice. Blocked vents can lead to heating inefficiency and dangerous backdrafts, so it’s essential to keep them unobstructed.

3. Monitor for Signs of Frost or Ice

Regularly inspect your heat pump or air conditioner for signs of excessive frost. While some frost is typical in freezing temps, your heat pump shouldn’t turn into a block of ice. If you notice heavy ice, call a professional to check the defrost cycle.

4. Schedule a Winter Maintenance Visit

One of the best ways to prepare your HVAC for snow is to book a professional tune-up. An experienced technician will inspect your system, perform routine maintenance, and address any potential problems before they escalate.

What To Do If Something Goes Wrong

Even when you’re diligent with maintenance, snowstorms can throw unexpected challenges at your HVAC system. If you notice any of these warning signs, it’s time to call in an expert:

Your heating system isn’t warming your home evenly.

The outdoor unit is noisy or completely iced over.

Your furnace cycles on and off more often than usual.

You or your family experience any unusual symptoms, such as headaches or dizziness (this could signal a carbon monoxide leak).

At Simmons One Hour, we specialize in fast, reliable heating repairs and maintenance. No matter how deep the snow or how cold it gets outside, our team is here to keep your home warm, safe, and comfortable.
