Let’s face it—this summer heat has been brutal. Your air conditioning system isn’t just working hard... it’s running a full-on marathon. And just like any runner, it needs to breathe. That’s where your air filter comes in. It’s the oxygen mask for your HVAC system.
But choosing the right filter isn’t as simple as grabbing the first one you see at the hardware store. If you’re not careful, you could be suffocating your system—and paying for it in repairs, reduced efficiency, or even complete breakdowns.
Here’s how to make sure your AC can breathe easy:
1. Know Your System’s Limits
Your HVAC system was designed with a specific range of filters in mind. Go too high on the MERV rating (that’s the Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value), and you could choke the airflow. A higher MERV means better filtration—but also more resistance. For most homes, a MERV 8 to 13 is the sweet spot. Anything higher, like a MERV 16, is for hospitals and can seriously strain a residential unit if it's not built for it.
2. Match It to Your Home’s Needs
Got pets? Allergies? Kids with asthma? Then you’ll want a filter that captures smaller particles like pet dander, pollen, and dust mites. Just remember: better filtration = tighter airflow. That means your system has to work harder unless it’s built to handle it. It’s all about balance.
3. Test the Fit
A filter should slide in snugly—no gaps, no forcing it. Too tight? You’re blocking airflow. Too loose? Air’s going around the filter, not through it. When your system kicks on, try gently pulling the filter out. You should feel a little resistance, like a light tug. That’s how you know it’s doing its job.
4. Avoid the Extremes
Don’t cheap out on a filter that only catches “sandwich bags and chickens” (yes, we’ve said it, and it’s still true). And don’t go overboard with the top-shelf MERV 16 unless your system was built for it. You need protection and performance. A MERV 8 or 10? That’s usually a solid middle ground.
5. Consider Smart Upgrades
Looking for next-level air quality without choking your system? Check out a MicroPower Guard Air Cleaner. It uses a small electric charge to pull in particles and trap them—kind of like a magnet for dust. You get powerful filtration without killing airflow.
6. Still Not Sure? Ask a Pro
Your system’s manual might have filter recommendations, or better yet—give your local HVAC team a call. If you’re in our area, Simmons One Hour Heating & Air Conditioning can help. We stock the right filters, offer professional advice, and even have auto-delivery so you’re never left guessing.
Your system’s doing the heavy lifting this summer—don’t let a clogged or wrong-sized filter be the thing that trips it up. Give it the oxygen it needs to go the distance.
