It's a question that comes up more than you'd think.

Someone is looking at their thermostat, notices the fan switch, and asks, "Wouldn't it be better if the fan just stayed on all the time?"

It sounds logical. If the air is always moving, the house should feel more comfortable.

But here in southeastern North Carolina, I almost always recommend leaving the fan set to Auto.

The reason has everything to do with humidity.


What's the Difference Between "On" and "Auto"?

Most thermostats have two fan settings.

When the fan is set to Auto, the blower only runs when your air conditioner or heat pump is actively heating or cooling your home.

When it's set to On, the blower runs all the time, whether the system is cooling or not.

At first, that sounds like a good idea. More airflow should make the house more comfortable.

Unfortunately, that's not how it works in our climate.

Your Air Conditioner Does More Than Cool

Most homeowners think an air conditioner has one job.

It doesn't.

Every time your system runs, it's doing two things at once. It's lowering the temperature inside your home, and it's removing moisture from the air.

That second job is just as important as the first.

As warm, humid air passes across the cold indoor evaporator coil, water vapor condenses into liquid, just like a cold glass of sweet tea sweating on a hot afternoon. That water drains away through the condensate line and leaves your home.

That's how your HVAC system helps keep your house comfortable instead of feeling damp and sticky.

What Happens When the Fan Runs Continuously?

Here's where the problem starts.

When your thermostat reaches the desired temperature, the compressor shuts off because the cooling cycle is complete.

The indoor coil, however, is still wet from removing humidity.

If the fan is set to On, the blower keeps moving air across that wet coil. Instead of allowing the moisture to drain away, some of it evaporates right back into the air and gets circulated through your home.

In other words, your air conditioner spends twenty minutes removing humidity, and then the fan spends the next several minutes putting some of it back.

The temperature on the thermostat may still say 75°, but the house begins to feel sticky because the humidity is climbing.

Why This Matters More in North Carolina

If you lived in a much drier part of the country, leaving the fan on all the time might not create many issues.

Here in southeastern North Carolina, it's a different story.

Our summers aren't just hot. They're humid.

Your air conditioner is constantly working to remove moisture from the air, and that's one of the biggest reasons your home feels comfortable.

We generally recommend keeping indoor humidity between 30% and 50%. Running the fan continuously can make it much harder for your system to stay in that range.

I've Seen It Firsthand

Over the years, I've seen this situation many times.

Someone moves here from a northern state or another dry climate where they always left the thermostat fan on. They continue doing the same thing after moving to North Carolina because that's what they've always done.

A few months later, they start noticing the house feels damp. Maybe there's a musty smell. Maybe they're seeing organic growth around vents or inside the ductwork.

One of the first things we check is the thermostat.

Many times, the fan has been running continuously.

Switching it back to Auto often makes a noticeable difference because the system can once again remove humidity the way it was designed.

Are There Any Exceptions?

There are.

Some newer variable-speed HVAC systems are designed to circulate air for longer periods while still controlling humidity. Homes with whole-home dehumidifiers may also operate differently.

Those systems are designed with that type of operation in mind.

For the vast majority of homes with a traditional central air conditioning system, though, Auto is still the best setting.

If you're ever unsure about your particular system, ask your HVAC professional before changing how it operates.

Here's the Takeaway

Your air conditioner isn't just cooling your home.

It's removing moisture every time it runs.

When you leave the thermostat fan on On, you're often putting some of that moisture right back into your home after the cooling cycle ends.

In our hot, humid North Carolina climate, that's working against one of the biggest jobs your air conditioner is designed to do.

For most homeowners, Auto is the better choice. It helps your system control humidity, improves comfort, and allows your HVAC system to operate the way it was engineered.

Sometimes the smallest setting on your thermostat can make a bigger difference than you realize.
