When your furnace or heating system kicks on, you might notice a faint smell of dust burning off the first time each season — that’s normal. But if you ever smell gas, that’s a whole different story.
You should never smell gas when your heating system is running. That odor is added to natural gas for one reason — to alert you that something’s wrong.
What That Gas Smell Really Means
A noticeable gas smell could indicate:
*A gas line leak somewhere near the furnace or supply piping
*A problem with gas pressure
*A faulty seal or connection inside the system
Whatever the cause, this is not something to “wait and see.” Gas leaks are dangerous and can lead to explosions, fire, or serious health risks if ignored.
What To Do Right Away
If you smell gas in or around your home:
1. Turn off your gas supply immediately — most meters have a shut-off valve.
2. Leave the area. Don’t flip any switches, light matches, or use electronics.
3. Call your gas company or 911 from outside the home.
4. Once the area is declared safe, contact a licensed HVAC professional to inspect your system and fix the issue.
This isn’t a “DIY” situation — it’s a safety emergency.
Install Carbon Monoxide Protection
If you have any gas appliances — furnace, stove, fireplace, or water heater — you should also have carbon monoxide detectors installed. Carbon monoxide (CO) is odorless, colorless, and deadly. A detector is your only early warning if CO builds up inside your home.
Safety First, Always
Your home should never smell like gas. When it does, take it seriously. Shut it down, step out, and call for help. Once everything’s safe, your trusted HVAC team can inspect the system, repair the problem, and make sure your family’s comfort and safety are fully restored.
